A Legacy

Sun Jun 10, 2012, 3:04 PM

Am I selfish for wanting to have my writing continue to entertain long after I am dead?

There is so much creative work on the internet that I do wonder if anyone else even thinks about this. For writing there are archives or writing sites where you can post your writing, and they never think of taking it down. For the first time ever I came across a writing site that will deactivate your site if you do not login on a regular basis. I deleted my account. What good is it to me to take pains to post my writing if it is inaccessible if I've not logged in after three or four days?

I know of seven writers that I only ever met on the internet that have died and their writing remains. I find this rather beautiful that they have such a legacy.

All that being said, other than Archive of Our Own, the other writing sites I have looked at this morning have to approve EVERY. SINGLE. CHAPTER. of a story I want to post. Do you know how old that gets with a multi-chapter story that is 91 chapters in length?

Protowilson's Severed Comic - Best laugh on the internet!

Kenneth Solfjeld - Just tripped over his gallery and it is beautiful. If you need inspiration, do stop on by.

gilbert8611 - this reminds me of the old Dick Tracy comic. All the features were exaggerated and angular. Very sharp and terrific!

Re: posting on sites

It's a matter of knowing the strengths and weaknesses of various sites.

Fanfiction dot net allows instance posting, multiple languages, but the sheer number of stories mean that people have a hard time finding you, unless you believe that God would guide your readers to you, plus people cannot see the replies to reviews, they exist only in PM version to the reviewer themselves, which is a really sh!tty thing to do, cus I love reading reviews as much as fics themselves, and the replies provide a glimpse to what kind of person the author(ess) is.

harrypotterfanfiction dot com is a fairly good quality English site, has an approx. one week waiting period (although you can earn yourself a Trusted Author status after a while, however some people never get that even after posting twenty chapters), you can show replies to reviews, however they have an iron grip on content violations and you must pre-warn everything that is to take place, if the couple are going to have (non-explicit) sex in the last chapter, or someone is going to light a cigarette in the middle of the story, you better make sure you change the warnings and ratings before you posted the first chappie. Plus, every chapter must exceed 500 words (not counting the A/Ns), so no short poems or haikus for you.

Mugglenetfanfiction is similar to HPFF, but it's kind of goody-two-shoes regarding content, you'll have difficulty posting stuff over PG-13 over there.

The Petulant Poetess is my favorite so far. You may post NC-17 material if you rate and warn things right, every chapter can be rated individually (e.g. Ch. 1: Remus goes on a picnic - "G"; Ch. 2: Graphic discription of Fenrir biting him - "R") so the reader may be prepared, best of all though, their review system is just like DeviantArt's: the reviewer could respond to the author[ess]'s reply, some of the entries were so touching to read.

Speaking of touching, you have got to read this authoress' stories: livvy6. ([link]) She writes SS/HG, SS/LE and SS/OFC fics, and the little mentioning made by the site (or maybe her relatives) really moved me to tears:

"Admins' Note: Livvy6 died suddenly on February 22, 2012, leaving behind her husband, six-year-old daughter, and seventeen stories well-loved by the TPP community. All who knew her—including those in Harry Potter fandom and all of us, here—are richer for having known her.

Requiescat in pace, Livvy. Always."

P.S.
I've got a few ideas for my own story, and I might be posting them on this site first if it ever comes to fruition. Would you be interested in reading?

David,

I'd read what you posted here.

I do post at ff dot net but most of my stories are PG 13. I'm rather glad my replies can't be read since I think they're usually boring. These days I can't reply as often as I want to.

I'm sticking to Archive, ff dot net and a new one called the Maple Leaf since they are easiest to upload chapters of a story to. The other two you mentioned have only been various kinds of trouble so I've not pursued them.

I have read Livvy's stories and am sorry to hear that she is gone. She was a terrific writer!
